Today, Sen. RaShaun Kemp (D–Atlanta) responded to the federal government’s decision to release a portion of previously frozen funds for after-school and summer programs.
In his statement, Sen. Kemp expressed appreciation for the release of $1.3 billion in funding but noted that “the damage has already been done.” He criticized the last-minute reversal for causing disruption for school districts and families preparing for the new school year.
Sen. Kemp pointed out that $5 billion in funding is still withheld by the federal government, urging its release without delay. He emphasized that these funds are crucial for teacher training, English language learners, and core infrastructure needed by students and educators.
He vowed to continue speaking out against decisions that he perceives as jeopardizing education and affecting families who depend on it. “Silence in the face of bad policy is not leadership,” he stated.
Sen. RaShaun Kemp represents Georgia’s 38th Senate District, which includes part of Fulton County.
