Senator Nabilah Islam Parkes of Duluth has officially requested a legal opinion from Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr regarding the application of the state’s abortion law in cases where a pregnant woman is declared medically brain dead. The request follows news reports about Adriana Smith, a Georgia resident who has been declared brain dead and is currently on life support due to her pregnancy.
In her letter, Sen. Islam Parkes raises concerns about whether state law mandates the continuation of life support under these circumstances, even if it goes against the wishes of the woman’s family.
The complete text of Sen. Islam Parkes’ letter is available for public access.
