The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced continued road construction and maintenance activities across Southeast Georgia from Saturday, February 28 through Friday, March 6. These projects will impact multiple interstates and state routes in the region, with various lane closures and detours scheduled.

GDOT stated that all work is subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen factors. The department advises drivers to reduce speed in work zones, pay attention to signage, and watch for workers.

On Interstate 95, northbound lanes between mileposts 111 and 112.5 in Chatham and Effingham counties will have nighttime closures for a widening project by the South Carolina Department of Transportation from September 2025 through December 2027. Additional overnight lane closures are planned at the St. Mary’s River Bridge on the Georgia-Florida state line as part of a bridge rehabilitation project managed by Florida DOT.

In Chatham County, the southbound ramp at Exit 102 on I-95 will see a continuous left shoulder closure until February 2, while both directions between mileposts 91 and 93 in Bryan County will have nightly single-lane closures for bridge rehabilitation through February 28.

Other ongoing work includes nightly single-lane closures along I-95 between mileposts 84 and 112 for bridge maintenance in Chatham and Bryan counties, as well as resurfacing operations in Glynn County from milepost 27 to milepost 36 continuing through April.

Interstate 16 also faces several disruptions: daily and nightly single-lane closures under Chatham Parkway Bridge continue until February 28; installation of intelligent transportation system equipment is causing daily shoulder closures in Candler, Bulloch, and Effingham counties on weekdays through late March or early May depending on location.

Bridge maintenance activities are underway on I-516 in Chatham County with continuous nightly lane closures between Louisville Road and Tremont Road.

Several local roads face full or partial closures with detours. Lewis Frasier Road in Liberty County remains closed for bridge replacement with a posted detour via US 17 and US 84. In Bulloch County, the US 301 Bypass railroad crossing west of Statesboro will be closed from Thursday morning until Friday evening during early March; drivers are directed to use SR 73/US 301/South Main Street as an alternate route.

Additional projects include corrective asphalt work on US 84/SR 38 at Doctors Creek in Long County with daily eastbound lane closures through late March; ongoing replacement of the south side of Satilla River Bridge affecting traffic flow; resurfacing efforts on several state routes such as SR 169 in Evans County (mid-March through June), SR 129 in Candler County (through March), SR 135 in Jeff Davis County (through March), and SR 19 spanning Telfair/Wheeler counties (March-May).

Other notable interruptions involve storm drain installation requiring weekend lane closure on Goshen Road in Effingham County starting Friday evening; road construction flagging operations along SR 119 near the Bulloch/Effingham county line; utility work related to the Effingham Parkway Project affecting Blue Jay Road; road widening projects on Burnsed Boulevard/US 80/SR 25/Brampton Road corridors; bridge demolition over CSX Railroad along Ogeechee Road; upcoming bridge replacement preparations on Portal Highway/CR223; right turn lane installation at Mud Road intersection with SR119 Connector; freight route improvements along Liberty Bypass Long Co.; two new all-way stop intersections installed as part of the US1 Bypass Project near Toombs County.

Motorists should expect delays throughout these areas. GDOT urges travelers to check real-time traffic updates before heading out by calling 511 or visiting https://511ga.org/, or by downloading the Georgia 511 app.

According to GDOT: “Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads. Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility. The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”
