The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced a series of ongoing and upcoming road construction and maintenance projects across Southeast Georgia for the week of September 6 through September 12, 2025. The agency advises motorists to be aware of potential delays and traffic interruptions in various counties as crews continue essential work on highways, bridges, and local roads.

All schedules are subject to change depending on weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Drivers are urged to reduce their speed, remain alert in work zones, and watch for personnel.

Interstate 95 will see multiple lane closures due to widening efforts by the South Carolina Department of Transportation between Knoxboro Creek Bridge and Savannah River Bridge from September 2–9 during overnight hours. In Camden County at the Florida state line, overnight repairs will affect St. Marys River Bridge with lane closures extending into both Florida and Georgia.

Other notable I-95 projects include travel lane shifts at Ogeechee River in Chatham County, bridge rehabilitation at Exit 87/US 17 in Bryan County—with a full traffic shift beginning the morning of September 10—and resurfacing between mileposts 27–36 in Glynn County running nightly through January 2026. Additional work continues near Jones Road Overpass to just south of Exit 87 (Liberty/Bryan Counties), including nightly asphalt resurfacing.

On Interstate 16, daily single-lane closures under Chatham Parkway Bridge in Chatham County are scheduled. Infrastructure installation for overhead message boards will result in shoulder closures along Laurens, Bryan, and Bulloch counties from September 8–19.

Interstate 516 will have continuous nighttime lane closures from Louisville Road to Tremont Road in Chatham County for bridge maintenance, along with concrete pavement repair throughout its length.

Bridge replacement projects require long-term detours such as Lewis Frasier Road at Peacock Creek in Liberty County—a closure expected to last about five months with marked detour routes provided.

Numerous state routes will also undergo bridge rehabilitation or maintenance activities causing daytime or nighttime lane closures. These include SR 46 over Fifteen Mile Creek (Candler County), SR121 over Fifteen Mile Creek (Candler County), SR25/US17 at Cypress Mill Creek (Glynn County), SR204 at Forest River (Chatham County), among others. Expected completion dates vary by project but several extend into late next year or beyond.

Resurfacing is planned on major corridors such as SR38/US84 (Liberty and Wayne Counties), SR196 (Liberty County), SR117 (Telfair County), and SR73/US301 (Bulloch County). Lane closures generally occur during evening or overnight hours to minimize impact on commuters.

Additional projects involve concrete pavement repairs on SR520/Ware County; utility work, road widening, paving operations, and bridge demolition along US80/SR26/Ogeechee Rd in Chatham; drainage improvements; roundabout construction; passing lanes; freight route reconstruction; all-way stop intersections associated with bypass projects; among others.

Motorists are reminded: “Motorists are cautioned to reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, pay attention and watch for workers.” The department further advises travelers: “Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.”

According to GDOT: “Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads. Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility. The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”
