The Georgia Department of Transportation announced that major construction activities for the State Route 400 Express Lanes Project will begin in April 2026. The project, delivered in partnership with SR 400 Peach Partners, LLC, is described as the largest transportation infrastructure initiative in state history and aims to improve long-term mobility in Fulton and Forsyth counties.
Motorists can expect to see construction equipment mobilizing, work zones being established, and phased traffic shifts as crews start foundational work for the future express lanes. This includes building new bridges and upgrading existing interchanges. All planned construction activities are anticipated to be complete by 2031.
Construction will take place both during the day and overnight, with most overnight work scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to minimize daytime traffic disruptions. The schedule may vary by location and activity, and is subject to change.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, “The SR 400 Express Lanes Project will add new, optional tolled express lanes from the North Springs MARTA Station to just north of McFarland Parkway to help manage congestion, improve travel reliability, and support growth. Construction includes two express lanes in each direction between the North Springs MARTA Station and McGinnis Ferry Road, and one express lane in each direction from McGinnis Ferry Road to just north of McFarland Parkway.” The department also said that “the express lanes are designed to keep traffic moving up to 30% faster than the general-purpose lanes while those existing lanes should see benefits as well. Managed lanes use ‘dynamic pricing,’ meaning toll rates adjust based on real-time traffic conditions. Advanced signage will display current toll rates prior to every express-lane entrance, allowing drivers the option to enter based on price and always offering drivers a reliable travel option while keeping existing general-purpose lanes free to use.”
The project also includes dedicated stations for MARTA’s future Bus Rapid Transit system on SR 400 with direct access at Holcomb Bridge Road, North Point Mall, and Windward Park and Ride. The SR 400 Express Lanes will become part of the larger Georgia Express Lanes Network.
SR 400 serves fast-growing communities north of Atlanta; historically these counties have housed over 20% of the region’s population according to regional models cited by Georgia DOT. The project is being delivered through a Public-Private Partnership model with SR 400 Peach Partners responsible for design, construction, operations, maintenance, and rehabilitation over approximately a 56-year period.
Motorists are advised by Georgia DOT officials that delays should be expected during construction phases; caution is urged when traveling through work zones due to potential schedule changes caused by weather or other factors.
