Steve Cortes, founder of the League of American Workers, said on May 22 that a recent multi-agency law enforcement operation in Stephens County, Georgia, reflects effective enforcement efforts following a sweep targeting illegal activity on national forest lands.

“Stephens County deputies just made 25 arrests in a single multi-agency forest operation — that’s what real enforcement looks like. While the political class in Atlanta hides behind sanctuary politics, rural Georgia sheriffs are doing the job Washington refuses to do. America First begins where the badge meets the boots,” Cortes said.

The operation involved multiple agencies, including the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Homeland Security, and the FBI North Georgia Major Offenders Task Force. It took place from May 3 to May 5 and resulted in 25 arrests, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimates that illegal immigration costs Georgia taxpayers nearly $3 billion annually, including about $1.7 billion in education costs and $769 million in criminal justice spending. Nationally, FAIR estimates a net fiscal impact of about $150 billion per year after accounting for taxes paid by undocumented immigrants.

Cortes is the founder and president of the League of American Workers, which focuses on policy issues involving workers, trade, immigration, and government spending.
