Steve Henson, a former member of the Georgia State Senate, has been elected to represent Georgia’s Congressional District 4 on the State Transportation Board of Georgia for a five-year term beginning April 15, 2026. He was chosen by a caucus of state representatives and senators from the district, which includes DeKalb and Gwinnett Counties.

Henson’s election is significant as the State Transportation Board determines policy and governs the Georgia Department of Transportation. The board plays a key role in shaping transportation infrastructure across the state.

According to the announcement, Henson is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor’s Degree in economics. He worked for over 40 years with the Laborers’ Southeast Training Fund before retiring in 2023. His legislative career included multiple terms in the Georgia State Senate representing both the 55th and 41st districts from 1991 to 1999 and from 2003 to 2021. During his tenure, he held leadership roles such as chair of the Consumer Affairs Committee, floor leader for Governor Zell Miller, chair of the DeKalb Senate Delegation, Senate Democratic Whip, and Senate Minority Leader for more than nine years. The statement also notes that he has received over 30 awards for advocacy in environmental protection, public education, and programs supporting individuals with disabilities.

In addition to his legislative service, Henson has participated in community organizations including the Stone Mountain Exchange Club, DeKalb JCs, American Association of Adapted Sports, and Youth Build DeKalb County. He was appointed by Governor Joe Frank Harris to serve on the Asbestos Licensing Board in 1986 and chaired it from 1988 to 1990. After leaving the senate, he chaired the DeKalb County Charter Review Commission until 2024.

The State Transportation Board consists of fourteen members who are each elected by their respective congressional district’s General Assembly caucus members. Members serve staggered five-year terms. More information about board members can be found as listed on the official roster page.
