House Speaker David Ralston announced that he will push for the secretary of state position to be elected by lawmakers, not voters.
This comes at a time when Republicans in Georgia are divided when it comes to the presidential election results.
Speaking to Valdosta Daily Times, the House speaker said it was high time they considered a different way of filling the secretary of state position.
“I'm dead serious about this and so we can consider next session a constitutional amendment that would provide for the election of the secretary of state of Georgia by the General Assembly and not in the fashion that it has been done for a long period of time,” he said. "I think it's the only way to right this ship. I don't do this lightly, I don't do this disrespectfully to the incumbent who I have high personal regard for, but I do it because we have a job to do."
Ralston blamed the Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for not representing the will of the people by not attending the House Governmental Affairs meeting. Raffensperger has also been slammed by congressmen and Donald Trump himself for refusing to take heed of their vote-rigging allegations. Many have called for Raffenspeger’s resignation, citing poor performance in office.
A constitutional amendment would require a two-thirds majority vote in the Georgia House and Senate to be put on the ballot for Georgians to ultimately decide on.
