Democrat Jon Ossoff has won, unseating Republican Sen. David Perdue in the second Senate runoff race.
Earlier today, Raphael Warnock defeated Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler. With their wins, Democrats will now control the U.S. Senate.
Not long after Warnock and Ossoff claimed their victories, a Georgia representative called for President Donald Trump’s impeachment after attacks occurred at the U.S. Capitol today by Trump supporters during the counting of Electoral College votes.
U.S. Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux (D-Ga.) issued a statement condemning what happened at the capitol building.
“Today, armed pro-Trump insurrectionists stormed our nation’s capitol and a person was shot,” Bourdeaux said in the statement. “I condemn what happened in the strongest possible terms — and we need to be clear that the outgoing president and his enablers have routinely fanned the flames that sparked today’s riots.”
Bordeaux joins Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who said she was already writing up impeachment papers.
Other Georgia officials also condemned the attack.
Gov. Brian Kemp said the attack was un-American.
“This is absolutely disgraceful, un-American, and must stop immediately,” Kemp tweeted. “The rule of law matters.”
Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan also objected to the attack.
“I vehemently condemn the rioting and violence at the US Capital,” Duncan tweeted. “@realDonaldTrump must stand up and and put out this fire he has created.”
Attorney General Chris Carr also said while he supported the right to peacefully protest, he did not support the destruction.
“I support the right of Americans to peacefully protest, but the violence and destruction we are seeing at the U.S. Capitol is unacceptable and un-American,” Carr tweeted. “I condemn these actions in the strongest possible sense. You can not support freedom, our Constitution or the rule of law and engage in this type of behavior. Those responsible must be stopped and held accountable.”
Trump himself called for everyone to be calm.
“I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful,” Trump tweeted. “No violence! Remember, We are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!”
