The 16-95 Improvement Project is underway in Georgia this week, bringing infrastructure enhancements to one of the state's busiest areas.
The project, which focuses specifically on the 16-95 area, aims to improve traffic flow and enhance safety to the I-16 at I-95 interchange and along the I-16 corridor, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT). The project brings two major changes to the area, including I-16/I-95 interchange reconstruction and I-16 widening from I-95 to I-516.
"We're working night and day on the #1695Improvement Projects. Here crews are setting beams for a new bridge," the DOT said in an Oct. 13 tweet.
Specific changes coming to the area include reconstructing six bridges, replacing four bridges and constructing three new bridges, according to the DOT. Through the project, state officials hope to alleviate congestion, decrease travel times and increase safety and operational efficiencies for all types of vehicles, including passenger and freight, the DOT said.
Savannah Mobility Contractors JV took the reigns on the new project and aims to be ready for construction by 2022, according to the DOT. During construction, construction signage will be placed approximately 2 miles in advance of project construction limits for safety purposes.
The 16-95 Improvement Project will help improve Georgia’s busiest freight corridors and the gateway to the growing port in Savannah, the DOT said.
