Officials said a giant solar power project starting in Georgia will be big enough to power 47,000 homes, according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on Oct. 20 that the new project is in Lee County and involves about 3,000 acres of land with solar panels producing 250 megawatts of electricity.

The project is being done by Silicon Ranch, which is Shell’s solar energy operation. A spokesperson for the project told The Atlanta Journal Constitution that the initial stage will serve Walton EMC and Facebook operations in the state of Georgia.

“This afternoon, Marty & I were in Lee County to announce a significant investment by @SiliconRanchCo, @GreenPowerEMC, and Walton EMC to construct a solar farm which will create jobs, produce clean energy, and benefit the surrounding community,” tweeted Gov. Brian Kemp. “Great work!”

The project is known as the Desoto Solar Farm. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that 500,000 solar panels are in line to be finished by December 2022.

The project will give jobs to 400 workers, the report said. There are two additional phases planned and the entire project is set to be finished between two and three years from now.
