Cobb County Commissioners approved a $1.4 billion budget July 26 that includes a pay raise for county employees.
Officials needed to increase pay to recruit new employees and keep current ones, according to a report by Fox 5 Atlanta.
"We've had employees that are underpaid by about 8% market average at a time it's hard to get workers at all," Cobb County Spokesman, Ross Cavitt, told Fox 5 Atlanta.
The pay increase will help bring average pay for employees in line, or just above, what similar counties pay their workers, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
Of the county’s approximately 5,000 full-and part-time positions, there are about 750 openings, with some retiring and others leaving for higher-paying jobs, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
As the employee crunch has lingered, the county had to use a million dollars from the contingency fund to hire private contractors to fill the gaps, the report stated. Employees can expect to see bigger paychecks as early as September.
