Brian Kemp | Brian Kemp Campaign
Governor Brian P. Kemp of Georgia has extended the suspension of gas and locomotive taxes until November 11, 2023, in an effort to ease the financial strain on the state's residents due to rising fuel prices and ongoing economic uncertainty. The decision aims to provide relief to Georgians grappling with increased living costs and inflation.
According to a press release on October 6th, Governor Kemp extended the State of Emergency and the suspension of the state's excise tax on motor and locomotive fuel due to high inflation and economic uncertainty stemming from federal policies. The gas tax suspension will continue until November 11, 2023, providing relief to Georgia residents amidst rising fuel prices. Governor Kemp emphasized the effort to alleviate financial strain on Georgians due to economic challenges and praised the collaborative approach with the General Assembly to support the state's citizens.
AAA reports that the average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline in Georgia is currently $3.18, notably lower than the national average of $3.72 per gallon as of Saturday, October 6th.
Governor Kemp's decision to extend the gas tax suspension has received support from Speaker Jon Burns who said, "Governor Kemp’s proactive leadership is protecting our economy and providing relief to hardworking Georgians and their families. While Washington does nothing, Georgia will continue to protect residents and visitors alike from crippling pain at the pump."
Governor Brian Kemp explained his decision by saying, "We're taking action at the state level to deliver relief to hardworking Georgians fighting through Bidenflation, soaring interest rates, and sky-high prices due to Bidenomics."
This is not the first time Governor Kemp has taken action to alleviate the burden of high fuel prices on Georgia residents. On September 12, he declared a state of emergency due to record-high inflation, leading to a temporary suspension of Georgia's gas tax. This move aimed to directly assist families in the state by saving 31.2 cents per gallon of gasoline and 35 cents per gallon of diesel fuel.
During the previous gas tax suspension from March to December 2022, Georgians saw savings of approximately $1.7 billion on fuel expenses, according to WRDW.
Yahoo Finance reported in September that gas prices under President Biden have averaged $3.62 per gallon, the highest under any president.
Governor Kemp's decision to extend the gas tax suspension is a response to concerns about economic uncertainty resulting from what he calls "irresponsible policies" emerging from Washington, D.C. He credits the General Assembly's diligent efforts and cautious financial planning for enabling the state to confidently halt the collection of the motor fuel tax.
By extending the gas tax suspension, Governor Kemp aims to provide relief to Georgia residents amidst rising fuel prices and ongoing economic challenges. The decision is part of the state's efforts to support its citizens and protect them from the impact of high inflation and economic uncertainty.
