Georgia's Rural Development Council concludes meetings with focus on critical issues

State Representative Mack Jackson (D-Sandersville), co-chair of the House Rural Development Council, recently led the council's final meetings for the 2023-2024 legislative term at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. Alongside co-chair State Representative Gerald Greene (R-Cuthbert), discussions focused on workforce development in the entertainment industry, optometry services in rural Georgia, and rural transportation and infrastructure. Following these sessions, the council adopted its final recommendations for the term.

"We've seen an urgent need to prioritize Georgia's rural communities, especially in the wake of the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene," said Rep. Jackson. "This council has dedicated its efforts to gathering the necessary information and resources to help restore rural Georgia to its full potential."

During a panel discussion on workforce development within Georgia’s entertainment industry, challenges specific to rural areas were highlighted. Panelists suggested expanding local talent pools to reduce costs associated with transporting large production companies into these regions.

The state of optometry services was also discussed, with local optometrists advocating for establishing practices in rural towns due to many patients needing to travel to larger metro areas for eye care.

House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) addressed members on prioritizing disaster relief and recovery following Hurricane Helene. He emphasized streamlining infrastructure as crucial for boosting workforce development and attracting businesses.

Experts from Georgia’s railroad industry called for investment in rail infrastructure, suggesting that developing rail-served industrial parks could ease congestion and create economic opportunities.

The council concluded by reviewing and adopting a report summarizing their findings throughout the term. Recommendations included prioritizing rural infrastructure, ensuring backup power for hospitals affected by Hurricane Helene, and advancing maternal and infant health centers.

The House Rural Development Council was established in 2017 to collaborate with rural communities on economic growth initiatives. Its mandate was renewed during the 2023 legislative session through House Resolution 488.
