State Representative Lehman Franklin of Statesboro has announced his sponsorship of a new bill aimed at protecting access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Georgia. This legislative move aligns with the priorities of House Speaker Jon Burns from Newington. The legislation seeks to ensure that residents facing infertility will continue to have access to IVF treatments.

Rep. Franklin shared personal reasons for his support, stating, “I am honored to put forth this legislation that will preserve access to IVF which has provided countless Georgia families with the blessing of a child—including my own.” He revealed that he and his wife are expecting their first daughter later this year thanks to IVF. “I want to ensure every family who faces the challenge of infertility has an opportunity to experience the miracle that IVF can provide,” he added.

House Speaker Jon Burns highlighted the significance of the legislation by noting, “Millions of Americans and Georgians are faced with infertility when they begin the journey to start or grow their families.” He emphasized that IVF has enabled thousands in Georgia to fulfill their dreams of parenthood, adding, “This legislation ensures that access to this life-changing medical assistance will never be a question in our state.”

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that 19 percent of women encounter infertility issues. In 2021 alone, over 2,300 children were born through IVF in Georgia, showcasing its impact as a viable solution for many.
