Students for Life of America has announced a $100,000 fundraiser to support medical care for Adriana Smith, a brain-dead pregnant woman in Georgia, and her unborn son.
According to Students for Life of America, the organization initiated this fundraiser through its Standing With You initiative to assist with medical expenses for Smith and her unborn child. Smith, a 30-year-old nurse from Georgia, was declared brain-dead in February 2025 after suffering from blood clots during early pregnancy. She remains on life support to allow her baby, now at 22 weeks gestational age, to continue developing until a planned cesarean section at 32 weeks.
As reported by the Associated Press, Georgia’s LIFE Act prohibits abortions once fetal cardiac activity is detected, usually around six weeks. However, it does not explicitly address life support decisions involving brain-dead pregnant women. The state’s Advance Directive for Health Care Act may require continued life support if the patient is pregnant with a viable fetus and has no documented wishes to the contrary. These overlapping laws have complicated Smith’s case, generating public debate on medical ethics, patient autonomy, and fetal rights.
According to The Guardian, Smith’s family faces mounting emotional and financial stress as they await the baby’s delivery. Over $6,800 has been raised toward the $100,000 goal. Doctors monitoring the pregnancy have identified fluid in the fetus’s brain; however, the child continues to grow, prompting cautious optimism. The family has named the unborn boy “Chance,” reflecting hope that he will survive and thrive despite his mother’s condition.
Students for Life of America was founded in 1988 and is based in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It is a national pro-life advocacy organization that trains students to promote anti-abortion values on high school and college campuses. According to its official mission statement, the group has over 2,000 student groups and engages in education, lobbying, and support services like Standing With You. The organization describes itself as building “a culture of life” by recruiting and mobilizing the next generation of pro-life leaders.
