State Representative Matt Reeves (R-Duluth) has announced the Georgia House’s approval of House Bill 1074, which will allow Suwanee residents to vote on a new property tax relief measure in November 2026. The proposed homestead exemption would provide $15,000 per year in relief for homeowners in Suwanee, exceeding the current amount offered by Gwinnett County. The legislation was requested unanimously by the city’s mayor and council.
“Homeownership is one of the most important investments a family can make, and this legislation is about helping Suwanee residents keep more of their hard-earned money in their own homes,” said Rep. Reeves. “I was proud to sponsor this measure at the request of the mayor and city council, and I’m grateful for the House’s support. This referendum will give voters the opportunity to provide meaningful property tax relief that exceeds the current county homestead amount and delivers real savings for local homeowners.”
Since taking office, Rep. Reeves has supported several property tax relief initiatives, including measures for Sugar Hill and Gwinnett County in both 2024 and 2026, as well as a proposal to raise the state minimum homestead exemption in 2024. He has also backed homeowner property relief legislation introduced by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington), which is still under consideration.
Rep. Reeves serves as chairman of the House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Insurance Rates and vice chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. He represents Sugar Hill, Suwanee, and Duluth in Gwinnett County.
Jon Burns, who is mentioned as sponsoring related legislation, was elected to represent Georgia’s 159th House District in 2005 after Ray Holland.
