Contractors working with the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will temporarily close interstate lanes as part of the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project, which aims to reconstruct and widen several ramps at the interchange. The project also includes adding collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.

Lane closures will be scheduled between November 7 and November 14, 2025, affecting various sections of I-285 Northbound and Southbound, I-20 Westbound and Eastbound, as well as other nearby roads. Only one ramp within the interchange will be closed at a time to maintain traffic flow. Detours have been coordinated so they do not conflict with each other.

On I-285 Northbound from Cascade Road to Bolton Road, single and double right-lane closures are planned nightly from November 10 to November 13. There will also be pacing operations on SR 166/Campbellton Road to the I-20 Interchange during midday hours.

For southbound traffic on I-285 between US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive, alternating lane closures will occur from November 7 through November 14 during overnight hours. Pacing operations are scheduled on SR 280/South Cobb Drive to the I-20 Interchange in the late morning hours from November 10 to November 13.

I-20 Westbound will see single right-lane closures between Anderson Avenue underpass and Riverside Parkway nightly from November 10 through November 13. On eastbound I-20 from Riverside Parkway to the I-285 Interchange, alternating single lane closures are set for similar dates and times.

Other impacted areas include SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive; both locations will have nightly right-lane closures.

A specific detour involves an overnight closure of the ramp from I-20 Westbound to I-285 Southbound beginning Friday, November 7 through Tuesday, November 18. During this period, motorists traveling on westbound I-20 should exit onto SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard (Exit 49), then take eastbound I-20 before merging onto southbound I-285.

According to Georgia DOT: “Advisory: Exact time may change due to weather conditions. There may be intermittent traffic pacing and lane and ramp closures that occur within the work zone in addition to this notice. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers.”

Real-time updates about traffic conditions can be accessed by calling Georgia’s travel information number (511), visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app. Additional details about the interchange project are available at this project information page.
