Warren Alexander O’Meara-Dates, founder of The 6:52 Project Foundation, has highlighted the significant impact of medical debt on marginalized patients with chronic conditions. He also called for reforms to the 340B Drug Pricing Program to better focus on patient care. O’Meara-Dates made these remarks on X.
“Medical debt is a national problem, but for marginalized communities who have chronic disease diagnoses, it’s exponential,” said Alexander O’Meara-Dates. “This is why the652project foundation is working with our National Partners ADAP advocacy & others to bring the 340B program back to centering patients.”
The 340B Drug Pricing Program was established by Congress in 1992 to allow safety-net health providers to purchase outpatient medications at discounted prices. Its primary goal was to assist hospitals and clinics in serving low-income and uninsured patients by maximizing limited resources. However, concerns have been raised that some participating hospitals may prioritize financial gain over direct community reinvestment, leading to bipartisan calls for program reforms.
According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), total sales under the 340B program reached approximately $44 billion in 2022, up from $24 billion in 2017. The GAO reported that oversight of the program remains limited and there is a lack of transparency regarding how hospitals utilize the savings generated. These issues have led to questions about whether the program effectively benefits its intended patient population.
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) reports that Georgia’s 340B program includes 57 participating hospitals with over 1,000 pharmacy contracts nationwide. A small portion of these contract pharmacies are located in medically underserved areas, and many involved hospitals provide charity care below the national average. This disparity has prompted stakeholders to question if the program still aligns with its original mission to serve vulnerable populations.
O’Meara-Dates is also noted as the Founder and CEO of The 6:52 Project Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Gadsden, Alabama that advocates for health equity, HIV justice, and LGBTQIA+ inclusion. In 2025, the organization celebrated its 15th anniversary by launching a new consulting division and relaunching its speakers bureau, “6:52 Speaks.”
