Tim Golden has been elected secretary of the State Transportation Board of Georgia. The election took place during the board’s monthly meeting on August 21. Jamie Boswell was elected chair, and Dennis McEntire was elected vice chair. These appointments are effective immediately. The board holds elections each year to ensure executive leadership represents all regions of the state.
Golden serves as the representative for Georgia’s 8th Congressional District (CD 8) and has been a member of the board since 2015. CD 8 includes counties such as Atkinson, Baldwin, Ben Hill, Berrien, Bibb, Bleckley, Brooks, Clinch, Coffee, Colquitt, Cook, Crisp, Dodge, Echols, Houston, Irwin, Jeff Davis, Jones, Lanier, Lowndes, Monroe, Pulaski, Telfair, Tift, Turner, Twiggs, Wilcox, Wilkinson and Worth.
Golden previously worked for ten years as a congressional assistant to U.S. Congressman Charles Hatcher. He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1990 and served eight years before being elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1998. He served there for sixteen years until retiring from the General Assembly in 2014. In 2015 he began his first term on the State Transportation Board.
The State Transportation Board is made up of fourteen members who set policy and oversee governance for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). Each member is chosen by a caucus from their respective congressional district within the Georgia General Assembly and serves staggered five-year terms. More information about current board members can be found at https://www.dot.ga.gov/GDOT/Pages/Board.aspx.
The GDOT is responsible for planning and maintaining both state and federal highways in Georgia. Its work also includes bridges; waterways; public transit; rail; general aviation; bicycle and pedestrian programs; and assistance to local governments with road maintenance. Nearly 4,000 employees work at GDOT with a focus on innovation and safety in transportation systems across Georgia.
“Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility,” according to the department’s statement. “The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”
