Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will proceed with construction on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County from June 27 to July 4, 2025. The activities, dependent on weather and site conditions, include overnight traffic pacing and flagging on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard as bridge construction is carried out.

On July 2 and July 3, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., law enforcement vehicles will slow traffic for safety, while flaggers guide drivers between the I-16 eastbound and westbound ramps. To accommodate increased holiday traffic, GDOT will suspend interstate lane closures from noon on July 3 until 10 p.m. on July 6.

Several long-term closures are ongoing, including Spring Street’s far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp. Construction work continues in Phases 4 and 5 from I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek with activities such as building bridge substructures and superstructures for entrance and exit ramps.

Phases 2 and 3 involve continued installation of Riverside Bridge lighting and Walnut Street guardrail over I-75. In Phase 1, evaluation of remaining work items is underway at the split between I-16/I-75 to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.

The $500 million project aims to enhance safety and mobility by widening and reconstructing sections of I-16, I-75, and their interchange through seven phases expected to conclude by 2030. The project promises improved lanes, new ramps, upgraded bridges, walls, drainage systems among other enhancements.

Motorists should expect delays during this period due to ongoing construction activities. They are advised to exercise caution when traveling through work zones and can access real-time updates via phone or online platforms provided by GDOT.

“The Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways,” according to a statement by GDOT. “We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit…Georgia DOT…is committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation…The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”
