The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced an upcoming traffic shift for eastbound travelers on Interstate 16. This change is due to the construction of a temporary detour bridge over the Ocmulgee River Overflow, a vital part of the project’s fourth phase.

GDOT contractors plan to implement the change on Saturday, April 26, 2025, expecting travelers to face potential delays on I-16 eastbound. To ensure safety, advance warning signs have been installed, and drivers are encouraged to stay alert and maintain reduced speeds in the work zone, exercising caution around workers and their equipment.

The starting point for this detour is identified at Mile Marker 3 on Interstate 16. GDOT advises motorists to be aware that these dates may be subject to change based on weather conditions or other unforeseen factors. To assist with travel planning, GDOT offers real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions through a variety of channels, including the phone line 511, the website 511ga.org, and the Georgia 511 app.

GDOT’s broad responsibilities include the planning, construction, and maintenance of Georgia’s state and federal highways, in addition to bridge, waterway, public transit, and other transportation programs. The department emphasizes its commitment to fostering a transportation system prioritizing innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility to strengthen Georgia’s competitiveness.
