Traffic on State Route 34 in Heard County will soon be redirected to a temporary bridge, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The shift is scheduled to begin on May 21, 2025, weather permitting. This change affects the section over the Chattahoochee River Tributary and Lumpkin Creek.
The project involves replacing existing bridges with new structures measuring 135 feet long and 40 feet wide. These will be built along the current roadway centerline. Temporary bridges for detours during construction will be situated southwest of the existing ones.
Motorists should prepare for potential delays and are advised to exercise caution and reduce speed in work zones. Real-time updates on traffic conditions can be accessed by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.
The GDOT emphasizes its role in maintaining state and federal highways while supporting local governments with road maintenance. It is committed to innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility in transportation systems.
“Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways,” states GDOT. “We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs.”
