Contractors working for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will implement a traffic shift on State Route 96 in Twiggs County starting December 10, 2025. The shift will begin at Dolly Drive and extend east for nearly two miles before reconnecting with the existing roadway at King Lane.
According to GDOT, “SR 96 will entirely shift right to the newly constructed portion for 1.95 miles before rejoining the existing roadway at King Lane.”
Access to destinations between Patricia Drive and District Road, including Mt. Olive Baptist Church, will be available from the Dolly Drive intersection. Several intersections along the affected section—CR 202/Dolly Drive, CR 101/District Road, CR 101/Herrington Road, SR 358/Homer Chance Highway, and CR 210/King Lane—will remain open during this period.
The traffic shift is scheduled to start at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, December 10. GDOT states that “Traffic Control Message Boards & advanced warning signage will be utilized to alert the traveling public on all affected routes.” Flagging stations will be present at both ends of the shifted segment and on side streets. Barricades and other devices will restrict access to closed sections.
Motorists are advised by GDOT: “Motorists should avoid the area and take an alternate route. Any updates or changes to the schedule will be posted on Facebook and Twitter @GDOTWest. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through these zones. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.”
The Georgia Department of Transportation oversees planning, construction, and maintenance of state and federal highways as well as other transportation programs across Georgia. The department employs nearly 4,000 people dedicated to improving safety and mobility within its transportation system.
