A traffic shift is scheduled to begin on December 15, 2025, as part of the widening project for SR 1/US 27/Hamilton Road in Troup County. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced that this phase will divert traffic onto a newly paved section near Lukken Industrial and Auburn Avenue before returning it to the original alignment near Fannin Street.

The change is necessary to facilitate Phase 2 of the project, which will add two additional travel lanes along the corridor. GDOT urges drivers to remain alert and reduce their speed while traveling through the area.

“Drivers are encouraged to drive alertly through the area and reduce their speeds,” stated GDOT.

The agency also advises motorists that dates may change due to weather or other factors. Delays are expected during construction, and drivers should exercise caution in work zones. Real-time updates on traffic conditions can be accessed by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.

The Georgia Department of Transportation oversees planning, construction, and maintenance for state and federal highways in Georgia. The department also supports local governments with road maintenance and manages programs related to bridges, waterways, public transit, rail, aviation, biking, and walking infrastructure. GDOT employs nearly 4,000 people who are dedicated to improving transportation safety, sustainability, innovation, and mobility across the state.

“The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation,” according to GDOT.
