A contractor from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is set to initiate a traffic shift to a temporary bridge on State Route 34 (SR 34) over the Chattahoochee River Tributary and Lumpkin Creek. This development is scheduled to commence on May 9, 2025, contingent on weather conditions.
This effort is part of a broader project aimed at replacing the existing bridges on SR 34 over the Chattahoochee River Tributary and Lumpkin Creek in Heard County, located east of Franklin, GA. The entire project spans approximately 0.729 miles and will see the introduction of new 135-feet long and 40-feet wide bridges placed along the current roadway centerline.
To facilitate construction, temporary bridges will be erected southwest of the current bridges, serving as on-site detours. The GDOT advises motorists to anticipate delays, exercise caution, and reduce speed when navigating these work zones. Real-time updates about the work status and traffic conditions can be accessed through the 511 services via call, website, or mobile app.
The GDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, and maintenance of Georgia’s state and federal highways, and is also engaged in various related programs including bridge and waterway management, as well as public transit, among others. With a workforce nearing 4,000 employees, the Department is committed to innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility in its transportation services, contributing to Georgia’s competitive edge through its leadership in the field.
Georgia Department of Transportation emphasized its commitment, stating: “Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility.”
