The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of State Route 109 and the northbound ramps of Interstate 85 in Troup County. This initiative is part of GDOT’s ongoing efforts to manage and regulate traffic flow, improve safety, and reduce congestion on state roads.
According to GDOT, advanced signal timing and detection technologies are being used to adjust signal cycles and phasing based on real-time traffic conditions. The department says this approach is designed to maximize road capacity while minimizing delays for motorists.
“Traffic signals help to separate conflicting traffic movements, reducing the likelihood of crashes, especially at intersections,” GDOT stated. The agency also noted that optimizing signal timing and deploying technologies such as Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA) signals can reduce delays, back-ups, idling times, fuel consumption, and emissions.
To maintain performance standards, GDOT uses a centralized software system that monitors traffic signals around the clock. This system allows quick identification and resolution of any malfunctions or issues affecting signal operations.
The design and permitting process for new traffic signals follows established guidelines intended to ensure consistency across state routes. Additionally, GDOT collaborates with local agencies through programs like Regional Traffic Signal Operations contracts to enhance coordination across jurisdictional boundaries.
GDOT advises motorists that project dates may change due to weather or other factors. Drivers are encouraged to expect delays in work zones, exercise caution, and reduce speed when traveling through these areas.
