Two previously convicted felons have been sentenced to federal prison for possessing firearms, according to a May 26 announcement by Southern District of Georgia U.S. Attorney Margaret E. ‘Meg’ Heap.

Laron Allen, 39, of Savannah, received a sentence of 135 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. According to the court proceedings, Savannah Police found Allen in possession of a firearm after he attempted to elude officers in May 2024.

Jeffrey Ronald Moyer, 42, of Augusta, was sentenced to 27 months in prison and fined $1,500. He will also serve three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Augusta University Police discovered Moyer with a shotgun during a traffic stop in March 2025.

The cases were investigated by the Augusta University Police Department, Savannah Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. They were prosecuted for the United States by Southern District of Georgia Assistant U.S. Attorneys Henry W. Syms Jr. and L. Alexander Hamner.

Under federal law, it is prohibited for previously convicted felons to possess firearms or ammunition; there is no parole in the federal system.

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia prosecutes federal crimes and manages civil litigation for the United States while employing about 70 attorneys and support staff at its headquarters in Savannah and staffed branch office in Augusta; it operates under the United States Department of Justice and promotes community safety through programs such as Project Safe Neighborhoods, according to the official website.
