The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia reported collecting over $35 million in civil and criminal penalties and forfeiting nearly $8 million in assets during Fiscal Year 2025, which ended on September 30, 2025.
“These collections and forfeitures underscore my office’s dedication to securing financial justice for victims and the public,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “We and our law enforcement partners will aggressively use all available legal means to hold wrongdoers accountable, compensate crime victims, and protect the public fisc by collecting debts owed to the government.”
The office collected more than $17 million in restitution, fines, and assessments from defendants in criminal cases during this period. Funds collected from criminal fines and assessments are directed to the Department of Justice’s Crime Victims Fund, which supports victim compensation and assistance programs at both federal and state levels.
In civil matters, affirmative enforcement actions resulted in over $18 million recovered through lawsuits against individuals or corporations accused of fraud or other misconduct against the government. The office also worked with other Department of Justice components to jointly collect an additional $34 million in both civil and criminal cases.
Asset forfeiture was another focus area for the office. The Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section used legal tools to seize property obtained through or used in crimes. In Fiscal Year 2025, more than $4.5 million was forfeited in criminal cases, while civil forfeiture accounted for over $1.5 million. An additional $1.8 million was forfeited through nonjudicial processes involving federal law enforcement partners.
Forfeited assets are used by the Department of Justice to compensate crime victims, support law enforcement agencies at various levels, and serve other purposes related to law enforcement operations. During Fiscal Year 2025, more than $3 million was returned to crime victims, while over $5 million was distributed among law enforcement agencies.
