Courtney Bonds, administrative assistant in the University of Georgia Police Department’s records unit, described her important role in supporting law enforcement operations in a statement released on May 8.
Bonds’ work matters because she is often the first point of contact for people seeking assistance at the department. Her duties include logging citations and warnings, helping community members file reports or retrieve property, and guiding those with non-police-related questions. She also processes departmental reports and manages records retention for up to 30 years.
Bonds joined the department in 2023 after serving as civil clerk for Oglethorpe County Superior Court. She holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Georgia Southern and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public administration at Columbus State University. “Still to this day, I watch criminal shows — ‘FBI,’ ‘Live PD,’ ‘Chicago PD’ — I love shows like that,” Bonds said. “That’s what drew me to the field.” She added that she enjoys working on the administrative side: “I love working in an office. You get to be hands-on and learn new things.”
Her responsibilities also include redacting sensitive information from reports before they are shared with other departments or external agencies. Bonds said training from her supervisor has helped her understand compliance requirements: “No matter how small you think your title is, your work is just as important in this field,” she said.
She credits her grandfather as inspiration for continuing her education while balancing family life and work commitments. Bonds noted that pursuing further studies sets an example for her young daughter about achieving goals: “Even though I’m not a police officer, my job is still important to getting things done.”
