Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) contractors will implement lane closures on Interstate 20 in Douglas County this weekend as part of an ongoing resurfacing project. The work, which aims to improve the condition of the roadway and provide a smoother ride for drivers, spans from east of Liberty Road to east of State Route 5/Bill Arp Road.
Weather and site conditions permitting, alternating single left or right lanes will be closed on I-20 westbound throughout the project limits starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 30, and continuing until 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 1. These closures are expected to last until 5 a.m. the following mornings.
The $29 million project involves milling, inlay, and resurfacing operations and is scheduled for completion in late fall 2025. “These closures will help ensure the safety of drivers and workers,” according to GDOT.
Motorists traveling through the area are advised to reduce speeds in the work zone and take precautions such as wearing seatbelts and avoiding distractions while driving. They are also encouraged to plan their routes by using resources like calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or downloading the Georgia 511 app for real-time updates on traffic conditions.
The Georgia Department of Transportation oversees planning, construction, and maintenance of state and federal highways across Georgia. Their mission includes involvement in various transportation programs such as bridge management, public transit, rail systems, general aviation initiatives, biking infrastructure, pedestrian programs, and support for local road maintenance efforts. “Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation,” GDOT stated.
