As a winter storm impacts Georgia, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) is actively responding to changing weather conditions across the state. Snowfall has been reported in several northern and northeastern counties, with forecasts indicating that snow could spread further south and east. Some areas initially expected to receive heavy snowfall may see less accumulation than anticipated.
Georgians are advised to stay informed about local conditions as snow can accumulate quickly, even on treated roads. Increasing winds are reducing visibility in affected areas, prompting GA Alerts for icy conditions in Gilmer, Murray, and Towns counties. Slick spots have also been reported in Gwinnett and Forsyth counties.
Georgia DOT crews are plowing roads in the north and northeast regions as snow continues to fall. Crews elsewhere are monitoring weather conditions and road temperatures, ready to begin plowing if necessary. The department is coordinating with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS), law enforcement, and local officials following Governor Kemp’s State of Emergency declaration for North and Central Georgia.
Motorists are urged to avoid driving if possible, especially in northern areas where slick conditions exist. Traffic volumes are currently 20% to 30% lower than normal statewide, aiding road crews’ efforts. Drivers who must travel should exercise caution by reducing speed and increasing following distance.
All Georgia Express Lanes remain closed until safe conditions return. HERO units continue 24-hour operations on metro Atlanta interstates, while CHAMP units provide assistance outside metro Atlanta. Motorists needing support can call 511 for HERO or CHAMP assistance.
Georgia DOT will adjust operations as needed throughout the storm. For real-time updates on road conditions or incidents, motorists can visit 511ga.org or contact 511GA.
