Republican Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue issued a joint statement saying the Secretary of State’s Office failed to provide transparency and accountability pertaining to the runoff election that is scheduled for Jan. 5.

Loeffler and Perdue asked Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office to provide a list of newly registered voters.

“It’s been one week since the voter registration deadline passed and the Secretary of State has failed to compile and release a final list of newly registered voters,” the statement read. “This is totally unacceptable — the deadline for new voter registration was December 7, 2020.”

The statement says Raffensperger’s office needs to fix the issue immediately.

“In-person early voting starts today, and the public remains without a full accounting of who is registered and who may attempt to cast a ballot in the runoff,” the statement read. “This lack of transparency needs to be rectified immediately, or the integrity of our elections will remain threatened.”

The senators said transparency is key and Raffensperger’s office isn’t doing its job.

“Georgians demand transparency, accountability, and accuracy in our elections process — and the Secretary of State is failing to provide it in a timely manner,” the statement read.

The deadline for new voter registration was Dec. 7 and mail-in voting started Nov. 20. In the runoff election, they are going up against Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. Whoever wins the elections will determine which political party will have the majority in the U.S. Senate.

The runoff election will occur because neither party received the required majority in their respective races during the Nov. 3 election.

During the Nov. 3 election, Warnock received 32.9 percent of the votes, while Loeffler received 25.9 percent. There were 19 other candidates in Loeffler’s race.

In Perdue’s race, he won 49.7 percent of the votes, while Ossoff received 47.9 percent of the votes. A Libertarian candidate, Shane Hazel, received 2.3 percent of the vote.
