Colquitt Police Chief Kenny Kirkland was found dead Aug. 25 following a single vehicle accident.
According to WFXL News, Kirkland had been missing since 3:30 p.m. the day before officers found him in the wreckage of his car.
Decatur County County Sheriff Wiley Griffin announced on Facebook that the wreckage was difficult to see from the road and that the accident may have possibly been the result of a health problem.
“Not only did I work with Chief Kirkland as his direct supervisor for 20 years, I was also his pastor for the past 10 years, and most importantly he was my friend,” Corey Thomas, city manager for Colquitt, told WFXL News.
Georgia Gov. Brian P. Kemp took to Twitter to voice his condolences for the fallen officer.
"The city of Colquitt lost a great leader on Wednesday. Please join the Kemp family in lifting up Chief Kirkland’s family, friends, and all who knew him during this most difficult time. Matthew 5:9" Kemp wrote in an Aug. 27 tweet.
Assistant Police Chief Tyrone Burns will take over command of the department.
Kirkland was laid to rest Monday morning following a funeral in Miller County.
