Covenant College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
Two home runs from Zeke Gilbert were not enough as the Covenant baseball team lost a close contest at Sewanee, 9-8.
The loss drops the Scots to 9-13 overall, while the Tigers improve to 3-21.
Covenant jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to a home run from Gilbert and a dropped fly ball which scored two.
But, after adding one run in the bottom of the first (3-1), the Tigers would soon take a 4-3 lead in the second, scoring three runs off of four hits.
Gilbert would then quickly tie it up in the top of the third with his second homer of the day (4-4). The homers marked the sophomore's fourth and fifth of the season and extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Sewanee soon took their lead back, however, by tacking on another run in their half of the third (5-4). And after holding Covenant scoreless in the fourth, a home run from Wesley House would score two more runners in the bottom of the inning, giving the host Tigers a three-run lead (7-4).
The back-and-forth action continued as Kenny Mills then worked a bases-loaded walk in the fifth, making it 7-5. But, another homer from House in the sixth quickly extended Sewanee's lead back out to three (8-5).
The Scots responded with two hits, including an RBI-single from Mills, in the top of the seventh which cut the deficit back down to one (8-7). But, the Tigers were not to be outdone, as they quickly added another run off two hits of their own, making it 9-7 after seven innings of play.
After a scoreless eighth inning for both teams, Covenant had one more chance in the top of the ninth. Lead-off man Mills would go yard, marking his third homer of the season and making it 9-8.
A single and a stolen base from Joseph Ridenour then put the tying run in scoring position with two outs. But, the Sewanee defense quickly recorded the last out, stopping the threat and earning the one-run victory.
Gilbert finished 2-of-3 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Mills also went 2-for-3, tallying three RBIs and two runs scored. Josh Harvey went a perfect 4-of-4 with a double. George Manera (0-1) earned the loss after pitching 2.1 innings and allowing four hits and three earned runs.
House was 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Cy Spencer (2-0) picked up the win, recording one strikeout, one walk, and zero earned runs in 0.1 innings pitched. Holden Shell earned the save (1).
