Harbin: 'Life is a gift, and we should protect it at all costs'

Republican Congressional candidate Blake Harbin, a Republican candidate for Georgia's Sixth District congressional seat, held a news conference at a Planned Parenthood office following the leaked Supreme Court draft ruling that could signal the court's intention to overturn the landmark abortion ruling Roe v. Wade.

Harbin said he is pro-life because he was raised by a single mom.

"I am my own pro-life story," the candidate said. "I was raised by a single mother who was pregnant in high school. She made a choice. She chose life. I’m here today because of her unconditional love and selfless sacrifice. Her courage was stronger than her shame. Despite countless struggles and   missing out on parts of her own life, she gave me an opportunity to live the American dream."

Life, Harbin said, "is a gift, and we should protect it at all costs. There’s so much conflict in the world, and the Roe v. Wade decision will likely add to it. However, I will continue my push to support the causes of Georgians. I’m here for them. I’m here for my family. I’m here for my mother.”         

In an unprecedented leak, Politico obtained a draft of the Supreme Court opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case seeking to overturn Roe v. Wade, according to CNBC. Roe v Wade, decided 49 years ago, guaranteed women's right to undergo an abortion. The official ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson is expected in June. Chief Justice John Roberts said of the leak, "Court employees have an exemplary and important tradition of respecting the confidentiality of the judicial process and upholding the trust of the Court. This was a singular and egregious breach of that trust that is an affront to the Court and the community of public servants who work here."                   

Harbin will face multiple GOP challengers in the May 24 primary election for Georgia's 6th Congressional District, including Byron Gatewood, Rich McCormick, and Mallory Staples, according to Ballotpedia.  The general election will take place on Nov. 8.                            

Harbin is the CEO of Houzzle Financial, according to his website.  He lost the ability to walk in 2007 due to a tragic accident, but determination and perseverance have enabled him to overcome that obstacle.  If elected, he pledges to use the same perseverance to fight for the interests of Georgians, his website says.
