Savannah, GA - Governor Brian P. Kemp, alongside Congressman Sam Graves, R-Mo, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, visited the Port of Savannah to emphasize the need for continued investment in harbor improvements.

Governor Kemp highlighted the significance of the Port of Savannah, stating, "The Port of Savannah isn't just one of Georgia's greatest economic engines, it's also an asset for the entire Southeast region and beyond."

GPA Board Chairman Kent Fountain explained the benefits of enhancing the Savannah Harbor, saying, "Clearing the way for larger ships to make a port of call in Savannah will allow vessels with up to 50 percent greater capacity to serve the entire U.S. East Coast."

Representative Buddy Carter expressed support for the expansion plans, stating, "Georgia’s First Congressional District is experiencing tremendous growth, and it is encouraging that the Georgia Ports Authority is planning for this expansion..."

Echoing the importance of the Port of Savannah, Representative Mike Collins emphasized, "The Port of Savannah is a key pillar of Georgia’s economy and a trade gateway for the entire United States."

GPA President and CEO Griff Lynch highlighted the advantages of a deeper and wider harbor, stating, “A deeper, wider harbor will allow vessels to move more cargo and transit the channel more quickly, getting U.S. exports to global markets with greater efficiency and lower emissions.”

The discussions at the Port of Savannah revolved around seeking authorization for a Savannah Harbor Improvement Project study to be included in the 2024 Water Resources Development Act. The study aims to determine the optimal depth and width of the harbor for future improvements, balancing economic benefits and environmental impact.

The Port of Savannah, crucial for international and domestic trade, is set to benefit from potential enhancements that would enable it to handle larger vessels and increase efficiency in cargo movements.

Georgia Ports Authority's ambitious investment plans reflect the state's commitment to enhancing its infrastructure to support economic growth. With a focus on expanding cargo handling capabilities, the Port of Savannah is poised to play an even more vital role in the nation's trade network.
