State Representative Robert Dickey has expressed approval for recent updates to the water withdrawal permit suspension policy in Georgia. As chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Dickey commended Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) for their efforts in revising the 2012 suspension affecting agricultural water withdrawals in parts of the Lower Flint and Chattahoochee River Basins.

Dickey highlighted the significance of this development, stating, "This update represents a monumental achievement for Georgia agriculture and is a testament to the thoughtful, science-based approach taken by EPD to manage our state’s water resources." He acknowledged the persistent requests from farmers and agricultural leaders for such changes, emphasizing its transformative potential for rural Georgia's agricultural community. He added that this progress balances environmental protection with agricultural needs.

Starting April 1, 2025, EPD will begin accepting applications for groundwater withdrawal permits. These permits will incorporate drought-related measures aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability of vital water resources. Since 2012, EPD has been collecting data and made limited modifications in 2023, including permits for frost protection. These steps laid the groundwork for current updates while maintaining a focus on resource management alongside farmers' requirements.

Further details about these modifications are available on EPD’s website.
