State Representative Steven Sainz has expressed approval following the Senate's passage of House Bill 266. This legislation proposes a full exemption from state income tax on military retirement benefits, aiming to maintain Georgia's status as a veteran-friendly state.

“The Senate substitute to HB 266 further enhances the tax deduction for veterans, marking a bipartisan win for the courageous men and women who have served our country,” stated Rep. Sainz. He emphasized that removing income tax on military retirement pay not only shows appreciation for veterans but also strengthens Georgia’s workforce and economy. Sainz encouraged veterans and advocacy groups to engage in discussions about contributing to this initiative.

The bill is now pending further action by the House, which must decide whether to agree with the Senate’s substitute. The proposed exemption seeks to attract skilled veterans to Georgia, boosting local businesses and economic growth, especially in Coastal Georgia where military installations are located.

“This legislation is more than just tax relief – it’s a strategic investment in our communities,” added Rep. Sainz. He highlighted that veterans bring valuable skills beneficial across various industries in Georgia.

HB 266 also aims to support military families by easing financial burdens during their transition into civilian life. Coastal Georgia could see significant benefits as military retirees invest locally.

With unanimous support in the House, finalizing HB 266 would demonstrate effective bipartisan collaboration. Rep. Sainz is committed to working with both Chambers towards its implementation by 2026.

Should the House agree with the Senate substitute, the bill will proceed to the governor for signing into law.
