Last week, two Senate bills aimed at supporting organ donation in Georgia passed through the House with unanimous support. Sponsored by Sen. John Albers (R–Roswell), these measures focus on enhancing the efficiency and recognition of organ donation processes.
Senate Bill 58, known as the “Georgia Transporting Life-Saving Organs and Personnel Act,” proposes to grant emergency organ transport vehicles the same operational abilities as ambulance services. Senate Bill 84 seeks to create a special license plate that acknowledges the importance of organ donation.
Sen. Albers expressed his personal connection to this cause, stating, “I know firsthand the impact that organ donation can have on a family after donating a kidney to my son in 2021.” He emphasized the urgency involved in transporting donated organs, noting that SB 58 aims to ensure timely delivery without traffic concerns for families awaiting transplants. Additionally, he highlighted SB 84's role in raising awareness about organ donation with its message: "Organ Donors Save Lives."
Having successfully moved through both legislative chambers, SB 58 is now pending approval from the Governor to become law. Meanwhile, SB 84 will return to the Senate for a final vote following its passage in the House by substitute.
