Georgia's Attorney General Chris Carr announced that the state is taking legal action against the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for hindering efforts to jam contraband cellphones in prisons. Carr said, "If the Biden administration won't cooperate, it should 'get out of the way.'" He made this declaration in a December 5 post on X.
"We're taking new action against the FCC for hindering law enforcement's ability to jam contraband cellphones in state prisons," said General Chris Carr. "If the Biden admin. won't work w/ us to combat violent crime, they should get out of the way & let our officers do their jobs."
According to Carr, he has filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the FCC. This request seeks documents related to the agency's refusal to allow state and local law enforcement to jam contraband cellphone signals in prisons. The request includes correspondence regarding Carr's June 2024 letter urging the FCC to permit the use of cellphone jamming technology. Carr cited concerns about contraband phones being used to orchestrate criminal activity within prisons and jails.

"Law enforcement is struggling to combat contraband cellphones due to an outdated policy that the federal government refuses to address or reconsider in any way," said Carr in a press release. "The solution is simple – by blocking the signal to contraband cellphones, we can help put a stop to violent crime that's directed from behind bars and enhance overall public safety efforts. If the Biden administration won’t work with us, they should get out of the way and allow our officers to do their jobs effectively."
Carr was appointed as Georgia's attorney general by then-Governor Nathan Deal in 2016 and was re-elected in November 2022. Since assuming office, he has focused on addressing issues such as human trafficking, gang activity, and opioid misuse. His initiatives include establishing Georgia's first Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit and Gang Prosecution Unit.
