Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) are preparing to shift traffic onto the newly constructed westbound bridge over the Ocmulgee River Overflow. The transition from the temporary bridge will begin on Saturday, April 5, 2025. This construction is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road infrastructure in the area.
The traffic shift will occur on Interstate 16 at Mile Marker 5. GDOT has advised that there may be potential lane closures as crews work in the area. Advance warnings will be provided to motorists to ensure they are aware of the operation. Drivers are urged to remain alert and reduce speed in work zones to ensure the safety of workers and equipment.
The scheduled date for the traffic shift is contingent on weather conditions and other factors. Motorists should anticipate possible delays and are encouraged to stay informed about current conditions. For real-time updates, individuals can use several resources such as calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or utilizing the Georgia 511 app.
GDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, and maintenance of Georgia's state and federal highways, and its mission includes innovation, safety, sustainability, and enhancing mobility. The department is committed to "delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility."
