The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has initiated the next phase of the Highway 20 widening project, allocating a significant $104 million contract to C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. Inc. This project aims to expand the highway from State Route 369 in Cherokee County to Post Road in Forsyth County.

Spanning approximately six miles, this section will increase the highway to three lanes in each direction. Parts of the project in Cherokee County, from I-575 to Union Hill Road, are near completion, while work in Forsyth County from Post Road to North Corners Parkway is ongoing, with an expected wrap-up by summer 2028.

The new phase will incorporate Reduced Conflict U-Turns (RCUTs) at selected intersections and implement raised medians. Construction is anticipated to commence shortly, targeting completion by November 2028.

"This next phase represents about a quarter of the entire project," stated GDOT District 6 Engineer Grant Waldrop. "We appreciate the public's patience during the construction, and we look forward to the smoother traffic flow once it's all complete."

Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and exercise caution while navigating through work zones. For up-to-date information, they can call 511, visit 511ga.org, or use the Georgia 511 app. GDOT assures that maintenance and construction teams continue their work under prescribed health guidelines due to the coronavirus pandemic.
