The Atlanta City Council has approved the development of a new training center for law enforcement and first responders.
FOX 5 reports the $90 million project is expected to help deal with the city’s uptick in crime.
“Our capital city and surrounding metropolitan area are facing a crime crisis,” Gov. Brian Kemp wrote in a letter to Atlanta City Council members, as mentioned in a recent press release from the governor’s office. “That’s why I have dedicated additional state resources, including the Department of Public Safety’s Crime Suppression Unit and millions of emergency dollars in state funding, to support the Atlanta Police Department.”
In the letter, Kemp urged the council to approve the center citing that the safety of families and communities “hang in the balance.”
The Atlanta Police Foundation will privately fund the first phase of the facility while the city of Atlanta has entered into a 30-year lease with a yearly payment of $1 million, according to FOX 5.
The building will be located on 85 acres in unincorporated DeKalb County.
Those opposed to the facility wanted the land to be used for trails and suggested the money go towards community resources, FOX 5 reported.
