The University of Georgia women's volleyball team narrowly lost to South Carolina in the 2021 Southeastern Conference opener, according to a press release.
The Bulldogs had won the opening set 26-24 and a crucial fourth set 25-17 to force a five-set showdown at the Carolina Volleyball Center on Sep 22; however, they were defeated in the fifth frame.
"We learned a lot tonight," head coach Tom Black said in the press release. "Both things we liked, and things we have to continue to improve. The key is to grow our ability to compete for longer periods of time. We're certainly looking forward to being home next Wednesday to host Florida."
In the first set, the Bulldogs won seven of their first nine rallies to take a 10-7 lead and force a Gamecock timeout, the release said.
South Carolina led 6-4 in the fifth set and went on a 7-1 rally to win the set 15-7.
Bulldogs sophomore libero Mallory Downing made 11 digs while sophomore Phoebe Awoleye made eight blocks and the Bulldogs recorded a season-high 15 blocks as a team, the release said.
