SK Group is bringing a first-of-its kind, glass-based semiconductor-part manufacturing facility to Covington, a move that will also add hundreds of new jobs in the area.
The project details, including its location, were finalized Oct. 28 when company officials signed a memorandum of understanding with the state of Georgia, according to a press release from Gov. Brian Kemp.
"SK is truly a pioneer that we are honored to have a long-term relationship with in Newton County," Lanier Sims, chairman of the Newton County Industrial Development Authority, said in the press release. "The Industrial Development Authority is grateful for this announcement, and we believe this is a continuation of strong partnership and perseverance together."
According to the release, the new facility is a more than $473 million dollar investment for the company and would bring 400 jobs that include high-tech engineers, skilled technicians and other workers who have experience in the semiconductor field.
The facility will be built at 3000 SKC Drive in Covington, property already owned by the company, the release stated.
SK Innovation has already announced additional investments that include two battery manufacturing facilities to supply the electric vehicle industry, the release stated. Those facilities amount to an almost $2.6 billion project.
