2022-2023 Calendar Updated with Additional DLD

Hs 01

Carl Scoggins Senior Middle School recently issued the following announcement.

Hello PCSD Community,

At the Nov. 30, 2021, Board of Education meeting, the school board heard a presentation regarding a revision to the 2022-2023 school year calendar. The new revised 2022-2023 school year calendar incorporates three additional asynchronous Digital Learning Days (see the school district Calendar web page). Asynchronous Digital Learning Days follow our Red Level 1 guidelines.

The additional Digital Learning Days (DLD) are:

August 5, 2022

For the past two years, the first Friday of the school year has been a Red Level 1 Digital Learning Day (DLD) at all schools. This adjustment has received positive feedback from parents, students, and staff because it allows an opportunity for students and staff to practice DLD and become familiar with their new teachers’ Canvas courses in a structured way so that they are prepared in the event of an unplanned school closing later in the year due to weather conditions or an emergency.

September 7, 2022 & January 13, 2023

These dates have been shifted to Red Level 1 Digital Learning Days (DLD) to allow a more efficient and beneficial approach to professional development for PCSD teachers. An increase in specialized programs for Reading and Math is showing measurable improvements in student performance across the district, but it also requires additional professional development to ensure teachers have the training and resources needed to provide your students the best education possible. By implementing asynchronous DLD on these dates, the district can address professional learning for all teachers at one time, and early in each semester when training is most critical. These Digital Learning Days will be more efficient and more economical than the current model, which spreads professional learning throughout the semester and requires hiring substitutes each time a teacher is out for training. Ultimately, the positive impact on student achievement will be greater.

The school district makes every effort to keep you informed of important programmatic changes, including changes to the school calendar. The changes discussed above will not take place until the 2022-2023 school year to allow our PCSD families time to plan accordingly.

Thank you!
