Covenant College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
Covenant women's basketball head coach Skylar Bareford announced Jacob Hooker as the program's full-time assistant coach.
Hooker replaces Jeromie Grammer, who is set to leave the program at the end of the academic year to pursue other career opportunities.
Hooker spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Covenant men's basketball program under former head coach Neal Young.
"I am extremely excited to work with Skylar. I have known her for her entire duration at Covenant and have always been impressed with her commitment to her players on and off the court, her positive attitude, and her love for Christ," said Hooker. "As a Covenant alum myself, I am enthusiastic to help Skylar continue to build up this program for all of the past players and future ones as well. I know the women's basketball program can be one of the best programs at Covenant, and I am thrilled about the opportunity to help make that a reality."
"We are so excited to have Coach Hook joining our program," said Bareford. "His previous experience has prepared him to step in immediately and impact our players and culture in positive ways. His passion for the game and love for Christ set him apart, and I am excited for how he will help our team take the next step."
Hooker was part of a men's basketball staff at Covenant that produced three winning campaigns and two USA South West Division championships. During his time as an assistant, Hooker aided the Scots to 43 victories and coached six All-USA South selections. This year, Covenant set a program record for winning percentage (.720) as the Scots finished 18-7 overall and earned the No. 1 seed in the USA South Tournament.
"I hope to instill passion and energy in the program. Whether that be in practice or games, I want my players to see a commitment from me to my craft and them," added Hooker. "I believe that my ability to recruit Covenant-fits will also add depth and quality to Skylar's roster. Mainly though, I want to build relationships with the players through skill development and discipleship. For the last three years, I have been committed to those passions with the men's program and I am looking forward to building those relationships on the women's side with the players."
Hooker was a part of the Covenant men's basketball program for four years as a student at Covenant. He was a member of the JV program and later was a student manager for the Scots.
A 2019 graduate of Covenant, Hooker earned his degree in biblical & theological studies.
