ATLANTA – State Representative Devan Seabaugh (R-Marietta) today stood with Governor Brian Kemp at the State Capitol in Atlanta, Ga. as he signed Senate Bill 517. Carried in the House by Rep. Seabaugh, SB 517 allows for certain uses of force by a law enforcement officer to be considered for immunity from prosecution.

“Enhancing public safety in Georgia is crucial for the well-being of our families and communities,” said Rep. Seabaugh. “Partnering with State Senator Randy Robertson to champion this legislation in the House was an honor as it’s essential that we acknowledge the sacrifices made by our law enforcement officials and also implement practical measures ensuring their safety while performing their duties."

Rep. Seabaugh continued, stating, "Granting immunity from prosecution for certain uses of force by officers provides added security for Georgia’s law enforcement personnel and fosters a safer, more secure environment for all residents."

Senate Bill 517 permits law enforcement officers to receive immunity from prosecution for specific uses of force. It includes references to immunity statutes related to justification, arrests with and without warrants and the use of deadly force in O.C.G.A. 16-3-20 and 17-4-20. Additionally, these references are incorporated into O.C.G.A. 51-11-9, which addresses immunity for civil liability.
