State Representative Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale) has been awarded a $1,000 donation of menstrual products by the National Federation for Women Legislators (NFWL). The donation is earmarked for her chosen organization, Princess and a Pad, Inc., which provides menstrual product kits to girls in need within the community. This initiative allows these girls to continue their education without interruption during their period.

"I am very thankful to NFWL for their recognition and honored that I am able to award such a deserving organization with this donation," said Rep. Burnough. "Princess and a Pad, Inc. is doing incredible things for girls in our community. I am certain that this donation of period products will go directly toward ensuring that women and girls are supported during their period so that they are not forced to miss school or work due to the financial burden of purchasing necessary medical products."

The NFWL selected Rep. Burnough as a recipient of the donation in partnership with Kimberly-Clark as part of an effort to raise awareness about period poverty and support innovative solutions addressing this issue. Throughout May, leading up to Period Poverty Awareness Week from May 20-28, 2024, Rep. Burnough has been featured on NFWL’s social media channels.

"We are thrilled with the incredible response we received for the ‘Ending Period Poverty with NFWL Contest,’" said Jody Thomas, Executive Director of NFWL. "The winning projects demonstrated a keen understanding of the challenges faced by individuals experiencing period poverty and provided innovative and actionable solutions to address this issue. We are excited to honor the winners and look forward to seeing their ideas in action."

Period poverty affects many Americans significantly; lack of access to menstrual products and hygiene education can lead to missed school or work days, social isolation, among other adverse outcomes. Both NFWL and Rep. Burnough are committed to raising awareness about period poverty and promoting equitable access to menstrual products for all individuals.
